Celebrate Earth Day as a Disc Golfer

Disc Golfers are a group of people who can easily appreciate all the outdoors has to offer.  Courses thrive on nature and the use of public parks.  Take a moment this Earth Day to reflect on how important a clean environment means to you, and to disc golf as a sport.

Nothing upsets me more on the course than going out and seeing a trail of snack wrappers and beverage containers scattered across a course.  “Educating” these players on etiquette and what some see as “common sense” is one way people try to help….but there are some players who could hear this until their ears fell off and still wouldn’t stop their littering.

Today, in honor of Earth Day, I went to my local course early and played a round with two trash bags: one for trash, one for recyling.  Everyone who helped agreed that it improved the appearance of the course, decreased the environmental impact of disc golf to the park, and was a great way to celebrate their passion for disc golf.

No need to stop thinking about the environment after Earth Day has passed.  Below is a short list of easy things you can do to help out the environment as a disc golfer:

1.  Carpool -     Save some gas and ride together when possible.  Even better, bring your not-yet-disc-golfing-friends out with you to the course and put one of your spare discs in their hands.

2.  Trash Pickup Rounds -     Take a bag out with you and some friends during a round and pickup trash.  Integrate it into the round by having the bottom player from the previous hole be the person to carry the bag next hole.

3.  Reusable Water Bottle -     Are you one of the disc golfers who drinks bottled water on the course?  Fill up a reusable/refillable bottle instead, and make your next plastic purchase a disc and not a one time use bottle.

What are some ways you or your friends, club, park, or events stay green on the course?
