Here is what Chad Parker of DGstickers had to say about the weekend.

It was a great weekend of disc golf, no doubt. The courses looked great and it was awesome to see so many players out. It was also really sweet to see some of the bigger names like Michael Johansen, Paul McBeth, Brian Schweberger, Nikko Locastro, Will Schusterick etc. crush it on a couple of my favorite Charlotte courses!

Saturday was a LONG day of disc golf. Even though AMs and PROs were on different courses, the AMs had their share of backups. We had nine hours of tournament play with a brief lunch between course/round changes…no rest for the weary. You just had to stay focused, on your game and respect everyone else on the course.

Sunday was “Renaissance Original” for the AMs. Between the change in course and the long Saturday, you saw the dynamics and endurance of players come into play for sure.
DGstickers threw in a shirt and some stickers for the Ring of Fire prizes on Sunday and people were stoked.

And special thanks to “Philly” Phil H. for the death-defying ride to get some lunch during our 20 minute break Saturday.

Champion Monarch Dye

I was hoping to play a little night disc golf yesterday, but the sudden cold and rain convinced me to save my energy for other rounds the weekend.

So while having a drink and filling some sticker orders, I got inspired to dye a new Innova champion monarch.

Disc Golf in the News

Disc golf is growing in popularity across the nation by leaps and bounds. More and more people are discovering the sport, picking up discs, and banging the chains. It is great to see the local non disc golf community notice the sport and take an interest in the game.

The Star News, out of Wilmington NC, came to check out the disc golf scene at Castle Hayne Park recently. Home to the New Hanover Disc Golf Club, reporter Amy Hotz found plenty of disc golfers on and off the fairways. Below is an except from her report.

“Ching!” That’s the sound of the area’s only disc golf course.

Players use flying discs (Frisbees) of various sizes and weights to hit targets that look like a basket made of chain. These “baskets” sit on poles about three feet off the ground. ..the game is not played on a rolling green field of grass. Players walk along paths through a pine forest to each target.

Disc golf is taken pretty seriously here. The New Hanover Disc Golf Club plays here regularly.

Fortunate for the locals, the course is challenging, thanks to 2x World Champion disc golfer and designer Harold Duvall. Home to an annual B-Tier PDGA event, Castle Hayne Park Disc Golf Course brings players from around the globe to enjoy it’s beauty and challenging shots.

PDGA Tournament Time - 8th Buckhorn Open

The Crew at DGstickers.com has been excited about the 2009 PDGA Tournament Schedule for some time.  We kicked off this year’s PDGA Tournament action at the 8th Buckhorn Open held at Harris Lake County Park in the Raleigh/Durham NC area.

This two day B-Tier tournament was filled up well in advance with talented disc golfers from the surrounding hours away.

Buckhorn takes full advantage of their terrain, especially the water. Not pictured is the nuclear power plant on the other side of the lake. Don't worry...no reported incidents of non-glow plastic illuminating in the area.

Buckhorn is a wonderfully maintained course with great use of changing elevation, woods, and most certainly water.  Technical play is definitely called for on this course, adding to it’s brutality towards new players.  Brushing up to Harris Lake can make for fierce winds, especially around water.

Though a beautiful weekend for disc golf, strong headwinds and cold mornings each day left competitors with more than just cold hands.  Much of the water was frozen during the morning rounds, including the small pond in the fairway of Hole 17.

While one disc golfer might treat a water hazard the same in both liquid and frozen states, this can’t be said for all disc golfers.  Attempts were made in the morning round to use the ice advantageously for a skip-shot up the fairway.  Unfortunately for one disc golfer in particular, not all areas of the ice were strong enough to withstand the impact of a skip-shot.  Faulty ice lead to at least one disc diving down to an icy grave.

Chad Parker of the DGsticker Crew managed to bring home 1st place in the Amateur Division.  Parker accredited his win to a mix of luck and consistency.  His play of the weekend occurred during the first round on hole 7.  Parker overexerts an approach shot from 40 feet out with a bad line…and the wind catches the disc quickly…slamming the disc into chains.

Our first PDGA tournament of 2009 was a great time.

How was yours?

Greenville Ice Bowl 2009

Ever played a tournament and ripped your drive right into a tree…..or missed a simple 10 footer?  What would you give to be able to redeem yourself from that very lie?

The answer…… $1.

How Disc Golf can save charities in down economy.

How Disc Golf can save charities in down economy.

The Greenville Disc Golf Club hosted their annual Ice Bowl on January 31st.  79 disc golfers traveled from hours away to compete at Meadow Brooke Park, Greenville NC.

First round consisted of standard tournament play, but with the ability to purchase up to 5 mulligans per hole for $1 each.  This money went straight to local charity.  The only catch was that only your first drive counted towards ace pool runs.  A mulligan ace is still a sweet ace in my eyes.

Knowledge Nugget : The plural form of mulligan (ie. mulligans) registers as a misspelled word in spell check.

Q:  Do you really need more than one mulligan?
A:  For charity, you betcha’!!

And speaking of aces…..there were plenty that day.  One disc golfer managed to throw 2 aces on back to back holes.  But this didn’t secure the hole ace pot, two other disc golfers each hit an ace in the second round.

Though no mulligans were available for second round, players were still not under the normal stresses of tournament play.  Players were paired up from top to bottom for doubles play in the second round, creating some semblance of balance in the disc golf world I suppose.  This afforded players the opportunity for mentoring and strategizing that is not always present during competitive disc golf rounds.

All in all it was a fun day of disc golf for charity.  Greenville Disc Golf was able to raise $680 for Pitt County Social Services and 138 pounds of food for the local food bank.  It just goes to show that you can make a difference with plastic other than just the card in your wallet.

1st Tournament of 2009 - Kinston Ice Bowl

DGstickers.com kicked off the New Year with a bang at Kinston NC’s 4th Annual Ice Bowl.

January 3rd brought more than chilly temperature and winds to Kinston NC.  91 disc golfers gathered together in fellowship to celebrate flying plastic, banging chains, and Eastern Carolina pig.  But more important than the friendly competition and good times among friends was the fundraising component.  This disc golf tournament was able to raise over $1300 and 450 pounds of food for local ICOR food bank and SPCA.

Kinston’s Ice Bowl 2009 harbored 8 divisions, and several winners.  Brian Schweberger of Tarboro, NC won the Open Division, after setting a new course record in Kinston last May at the King’s Cup III.

2 of the 8 divisions were womens divisions, consisting of a novice and intermediate women.  Brandi Woods won Intermediate Women.  Kelly Mizelle of Raleigh, NC brought home 1st in Novice Women.

We had a chance to talk with Kelly after the ceremony.  She explained her excitement in playing her first tournament and performing well.  For her it was not just about the competition and fundraising, but about the newfound friendships and fellowship on the course.  Kelly announced her plans to continue tournaments….so watch out!
